Kirkham Slugs Matadors to 8-4 Win
The Hartford Matadors defeated the Nashville Lasers, 8-4, in part because of right fielder Willie Kirkham. Kirkham hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 for the Matadors. Mario Ruiz, who is tied for 7th in the SC in saves with 16, was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, with 7 walks and 7 strikeouts. Ricky Hill closed it out for Hartford, earning his 12th save.

With Hartford leading 5-2 in the top of the fifth, Kirkham hit a fastball from Eddie Arriaga for a 3-run home run. It was his 14th home run of the season and put the Matadors ahead, 8-2.

"I like winning," Kirkham told the Hartford Bulletin. "I may joke around, but when it comes down to it, winning is the most important thing."
