5-for-5 Day for Avenell
Saturday, May 1st , 2021
After a 5-hit effort to lead West Virginia's 9-1 victory over the Houston Cougars, catcher Jonathan Avenell told BNN beat writers it had been "a special day."

"It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college, two hits in a game is nice," he said. "Three or four is better, but five or more is out of sight. And to do that at the ABA College-level is really something special."

The 18-year-old player earned his accolades at Schroeder Park with a spectacular 5-for-5 game against the Cougars.

"His swing is getting there," said Mountaineers skipper Gene Lubas, who spoke glowingly of Avenell after the game. "We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Jonathan did that to perfection."

Jonathan Avenell singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Jeremy Schroeter in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Ryan Janssen in the 9th.

A look at his current stats shows Avenell with a .343 average, 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He has played in 42 games.
