Hernandez Goes Long 3 Times
Sunday, March 23rd , 2025
West Virginia Mountaineers second baseman Chris Hernandez almost did it all. He sent three shots out of the ballpark, scored 3 times and drove in 5 runs and had 3 hits in 5 at-bats.
The one thing he could not do, however, was lead the Mountaineers to victory. The Texas Tech Red Raiders escaped with the win, 12-6, despite being on the receiving end of the barrage from Hernandez.
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't like hitting three homers, but losing takes a little glitter off the game," he admitted to BNN writers after the game.
Chris Hernandez hit a two-run home run off Ben Morgan in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Ben Morgan in the 3rd, struck out in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Ben Bagwell in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.
"When someone hits three home runs, you put yourself in a tough position to win," said West Virginia manager Gene Lubas. "We were lucky to win this one. I don't think it matters how hard you throw, especially in the Conference 2. If you leave a ball out over the plate to good ABA College hitters, if they get a bead on you and you leave it over the middle, they're probably going to take a good hack at it."
A look at his season totals shows Hernandez with 10 home runs, .390 BA, .438 OBP, 17 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
