Virginia Takes Elite 8

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat were on full display tonight at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park as the Elite 8 stretched to the final game.

It was the Virginia Cavaliers feeling the thrill of victory, with a 6-3 win over the Purdue Boilermakers, who were feeling the devastation of coming up short in their quest to make the Final 4.

"There's no way around it -- this sucks," said Purdue manager Joey Manier. "Congratulations to Virginia, but I won't sugarcoat it, no one is happy about anything that transpired here tonight."

Instrumental in the 2-1 series win was second baseman Jose Ortega, who was named MVP. He hit .455 with a .500 on-base percentage. He had 3 home runs, drove in 4 RBI and scored 3 runs.

"We've got the most important stat of all and that's this final win -- that's the one that matters," he said.

The Virginia Cavaliers will play against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the next round. Nebraska won their series against the UCLA Bruins 2 games to 0. The Final 4 schedule will be announced after the Elite 8 finishes.
