Monday, May 10th , 2021
The joy and relief on the faces of the Purdue Boilermakers players was obvious as they celebrated their Sweet 16 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini.
"In a series like this, the smallest thing can make the difference in how it turns out," said Purdue second baseman David Cabrera, shortly after the 6-5 win that clinched the series 2-1. "We're happy we did what it takes to get it done."
The team is now off to the Elite 8.
Cabrera won series MVP honors on the strength of his .500 batting average during the series. He also had a .533 on-base percentage and 0 home runs, drove in 2 RBI and scored 1 runs.
The Purdue Boilermakers will play against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the next round. Penn State won their series against the California Golden Bears 2 games to 0. The Elite 8 schedule will be announced after the Sweet 16 finishes.
