Ray Mendoza never let Hickory get something going. The New Rochelle right-hander commanded his knuckle curve in pitching the Purple Wave to a 5-1 win. By defeating Hickory, the third-place Purple Wave improved to 47-49.
Michael Nava hit a run-scoring double off Ricardo Martinez in the bottom of the third, which put the Purple Wave in front, 1-0. In addition to the double, Nava had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.
"We'll enjoy this win for now, but it's just one," Nava told local reporters. "We've got to keep it going."
