Fleet Sink Gangsters, 5-3

The San Diego Fleet picked up a win at San Diego Stadium, knocking off the Chicago Gangsters, 5-3. Starting pitcher Carlos Mendez played a key role in the triumph. The winner was Brad Antol in relief. His record improves to 4-1. Butch Saulters took the loss. The Fleet go to 62-53, putting them third in the National Conference West Division.
The Gangsters had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Fleet going into the bottom of the seventh inning. That changed quickly when the former first round draft pick Jon Pitts came to the plate. Pitts hit a 2-run double on a 2-1 cutter from Chicago hurler Butch Saulters. It was Pitts's 20th double of the year.
"We have a lot of confidence in Carlos," said San Diego manager Chris Evans.
