The Mexico City Aztecs went home winners at Tony Gwynn Stadium, thanks in large part to starter Steve Sharkey. Sharkey stifled the Kalamazoo Comets, enabling Mexico City to grab the 2-1 win. Mexico City reliever Joe Love picked up the win to move to 1-1. Jim Unknown suffered the loss. Mexico City has a record of 11-13.

The game-ending blow was delivered by Tony Thomas in the bottom of the ninth. That's when he hit a solo home run off 22-year old left-handed pitcher Jim Unknown to win it for Mexico City and cause the home crowd to erupt in celebration.

"I'm proud of the way we took care of business and got the 'W' today," Thomas told the Mexico City Today. "Whatever it takes."
