The 2021 season is off to a good start for the Poplar Bluff Hillbillies. The hometown Hillbillies knocked off the Weedpatch Widowmakers, 5-1, at Owls Ballpark. Poplar Bluff pitcher Kevin Farris paced his team to the win. Farris, now 1-0, was the winner. In 8.2 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 9, walking 1, and allowing 1 run.

The Widowmakers had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hillbillies going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 19-year old first baseman Bobby Phillips came to the plate. Phillips hit a 2-run double on a first pitch curveball from Weedpatch hurler Jeremy Sharpe. It was Phillips's 1st double of the year.

In postgame comments to the Poplar Bluff News, Phillips said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
