The Newark Flyers earned a close win over the Santa Rosa Desperados, thanks in part to Steve McCutcheon. The Newark right-hander, who is tied for 5th in the N-A in quality starts with 17, played a key role in the 3-2 victory. McCutcheon, now 11-9, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 2 runs. The Flyers now own a record of 89-41.
Newark used the timely hitting of John Mahoney to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Flyers on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," Mahoney said in postgame remarks. "Soon enough, the finish line will be in sight."
