In a low-scoring contest between the Newark Flyers and the Santa Rosa Desperados, 22-year old right-handed pitcher Nick Compean proved to be the difference. The Newark right-hander earned props for his performance in the 2-1 Flyers win. In 5.2 innings, Compean surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 3. He allowed 1 run. Ryan Larkins closed it out for his 19th save.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Edwin Arroyo? The Newark right fielder had a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Flyers on top, 1-0. For the game, Arroyo had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Nick was doing a good job pouring in strikes," said Newark manager Matt Conners.
