Flyers Rally Late to Clip St. Catharines
|
The St. Catharines Blue Jays got a superb performance from pitcher Marty Carpenter. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Newark. The Flyers won the game, 2-1. Carpenter threw 7.0 innings of shutout ball. The win went to Jason Gaiser in relief, making him now 6-5. Mike Dineen took the loss for St. Catharines. Newark, at 73-40, occupies third place in the Northern A East Division.
Newark needed the clutch hitting of Ashton McSparin to seal the deal. The shortstop swatted a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Flyers on top, 2-1. For the game, McSparin had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Some games build character," said Newark manager Carlos Almendarez. "Like this one."
