Both offenses were feeble at Alcoa Grounds. Fortunately for the Alcoa Millionaires, though, Mike Gross delivered in the clutch. He was 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once, to help his team topple the Washington Wildthings, 2-1. Steve Sharkey earned the save, his 1st. Washington is still trying to get off the schneid, having lost 9 in a row.
Gross had a timely hit for Alcoa in the bottom of the sixth. With Alcoa trailing 1-0, he turned a 2-0 fastball into a 2-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season, making it 2-1, Alcoa.
"That's baseball," said Washington manager Bob Platter. "You're not always going to be hitting on all cylinders."
