Matadors Win Squeaker, 2-1, Over Mad Ants
|
The Hartford Matadors got a marvelous performance from pitcher Alberto Renteria. The right-hander kept the Portland offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 2-1 Hartford victory at Ballpark of Tacoma. Jeremy Carter, now 4-0, was credited with the win in 1 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 3 and walking 0. Their 75-38 record puts the Matadors first in the Stars Conference West Division.
Batting in the bottom of the ninth, 24-year old first baseman Craig Kelley had a real shot to win the game. Portland pitcher Chase Collins was determined not to let it happen. But with one out, Kelley hit a run-scoring single. The Matadors had a walk-off triumph.
Hartford manager Jesse Heugly commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
