Canadiens Drop Stampede, 4-3
|
The Montreal Canadiens besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Lubbock second baseman Jose Fontes by beating the Stampede, 4-3, at Oilers Ballpark. Fontes went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Jim Unknown earned the save for Montreal, his 1st of the year. The last-place Canadiens own a record of 26-60.
Bobby Brenner had a big 2-run home run for the Canadiens in the bottom of the second inning. With Montreal leading 2-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a knuckle curve from 29-year old right-handed pitcher Juan Barron and punished it. The result was his 6th home run of the season, which put the Canadiens on top, 4-0.
"I felt good up there," said Brenner. "I saw the ball well."
