The Montreal Royals overcame a pretty good performance by Portland right fielder Don Hutchison, beating the Mad Ants, 7-6, at Turtles Ballpark. Hutchison went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. The winning pitcher was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Mark Stuart. He tossed 96 pitches over 7.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits. Montreal is now 53-25, Portland 36-42.
The Royals got a big at-bat from catcher Roger Gotsch. For the game, Gotsch was 1 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the second, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 9th home run of the season gave Montreal a 4-1 lead.
"It was a solid team effort," said Gotsch after the game.
