The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Portland Mad Ants in 14 innings, 9-8, in part because of first baseman Jim Wilkes. Wilkes went 4-6 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times for the Canadiens. The Canadiens now have a record of 20-50.

Up to bat in the bottom of the 14th, 26-year old second baseman Billy Fernandez had a chance to be the hero. Portland pitcher Dane Roberts wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly. The Canadiens had themselves a thrilling win.

"What a great win for our team," said a jubilant , the Montreal manager.
