Canadiens Squelch Matadors Offense in Shutout Win
|
Riding the 3-hit performance of the 23-year old second baseman Billy Fernandez, the Montreal Canadiens stopped the Hartford Matadors, 5-0, in 9 innings. Montreal reliever Frank Taylor picked up the win, upping his record to 3-5. Gabe Vincent took the loss. Dustin Lewis got credit for the save for Montreal. It was his 2nd of the year.
Ben Workman had a big 3-run home run for the Canadiens in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Montreal leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Gabe Vincent, who is tied for 2nd in the SC in innings pitched with 73.1, and punished it. The result was his 6th home run of the season, which put the Canadiens on top, 5-0.
"Solid game, solid win tonight," said a smiling Fernandez.
The losing streak for Hartford has now reached 4 games.
