The Portland Mad Ants faced a tough opponent in Little Rock pitcher Mel Duran, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Ballpark of Newport News by a final score of 2-1. Duran went 7 innings and allowed 1 run. The first-place Mad Ants improved to 26-18.

Portland needed the clutch hitting of Jerry Blake to seal the deal. The right fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the 12th inning to put the Mad Ants on top, 2-1. For the game, Blake had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
