|
Portland beat Montreal on the strength of starting pitcher Rodrigo Izquierdo's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 3-2. Izquierdo, the winner, moves to 5-1. He threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 1 walk. Rich Wilkinson recorded his 10th save for Portland.
Portland needed the clutch hitting of Rich Kesterson to notch the win. The shortstop hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mad Ants on top, 3-2. For the game, Kesterson had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
"We were in it," said Montreal manager Bobby White. "We just didn't score enough runs."
The Mad Ants, at 20-14, have now won 6 straight.
