Loss Tarnishes Fine Performance by Perez
The Lubbock Stampede overcame a pretty good performance by Hartford third baseman Tony Perez, beating the Matadors, 7-5, at Reagor Dykes Stadium. Perez was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Earning his 4th save for Lubbock was Rick Ways. Lubbock is now 17-14.

Doing his part for Lubbock was first baseman Steve Howard, who stroked a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, Howard was 1-5.

"Like I've always said, I'm the straw that stirs the drink," Howard said (again).
