Orono Oaks manager Mike Barriga knew it was a gamble to give the start to rookie Jeremy Reich. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a supportive hometown crowd, the 23-year-old right-hander silenced the visiting Westwood Bruins at University of Maine Stadium. The Oaks shut out the Bruins by a final score of 1-0, to give the Oaks a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Division Series.

Reich was in the zone, shutting down Westwood hitters over 6.1 innings. Reich, who threw 105 pitches, allowed no runs on 4 hits. He also tallied 8 punchouts.

"It's a mindset," said Reich. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at University of Maine Stadium in Orono.
