For a couple of seconds, he didn't move. "I took a breath and told myself 'This is the last one,'" Welch recalled. The left-hander collected himself, got the final out, and finished one of the greatest performances of his career. The Alabama left-hander no-hit the Auburn Tigers, 5-0, at Samford Stadium – Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park, finishing with 1 walks and 8 strikeouts, facing only 28 batters. "I knew for a while it was a no-hitter," Welch admitted later. "But I really didn't worry about it until the last out. I thought I just wanted to win the game, and then I realized I wanted the no-hitter, too." |
