Mike Hernandez turning heads with a major uptick in velocity Thursday, February 20th , 2025 This offseason, Mike Hernandez made a dramatic leap in his pitching velocity, a change that has many excited about his potential for a breakout year. After focusing on strength, mechanics, and explosiveness, Hernandez added significant speed to his fastball and off-speed pitches, with results that have turned heads coming into spring training. Mike Hernandez worked closely with the Hartford Matadors strength and conditioning staff, following a rigorous training program designed to maximize his power. By emphasizing lower-body strength, rotational power, and explosive movement, Mike Hernandez was able to generate more velocity without losing command or control. The work paid off and he consistently sits several miles per hour faster than last season. This bump in speed should also help his secondary pitches as well, preventing hitters from sitting on his offspeed pitches. “It's been a huge focus for me this offseason,” Mike Hernandez said. “I’ve been working on generating more power from the ground up, and I’ve been able to push my velocity to a level I didn’t think was possible.
