Wednesday, January 1st , 2025
Thousands of fans braved the wind to watch and cheer as baseball's latest legend, Yasuzo Yamaoka, was inducted into the American Baseball Association Hall of Fame today. With his 553 home runs, 1973 hits and lifetime .281 batting average, everyone knew the gifted right fielder belonged with the immortals of the game. Still, Yamaoka remained humble.
"I'm a very lucky person to be born with the skill to play baseball and through baseball I built a name for myself," said Yamaoka. Now his career as a baseball player is complete. "This seals it," he said. "To get the recognition that every ballplayer seeks -- this is completion for me."
Yamaoka retired at 42 in 2019. He was inducted as a member of the Oakland Invaders, earning votes from 87.9% of eligible voters. In his epic career he played in 1998 games and finished with 1368 RBIs and 1234 runs scored.
