Tarp Trip More Serious Than Thought for Calder
Friday, August 21st , 2026
What seemed comical at the time has turned out to be no laughing matter for Ben Calder of the Pines. The starting pitcher joked with teammates after stumbling over the renegade tarp and twisting his left ankle. However, the ankle swelled over the next few days and tests revealed Calder had actually suffered a high ankle sprain. The revised diagnosis is bad news for Maine, since it means Calder may be out for a month or more. The Pines are currently at 61-65 and in last place in their division. Asked if the team may need to explore trade options, manager David Whigham said, "It's too early to tell at this point. We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it."
