Cooper Sparkles in 7-0 Shutout
Wednesday, July 14th , 2021
Xavier Cooper of the San Diego Fleet was on top of his game.
The 28-year-old tantalized the Boston Whistlers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.
"He had the changeup working," Boston manager Ben Foster said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The San Diego hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Cooper told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
On his stats sheet for the year Cooper shows a 8-6 record, 19 starts, 138 innings, 84 strikeouts and a 3.07 ERA.
