Kevin Farris imposed his will on the Stars from the get-go. Relying mainly on his cutter, the right-hander spearheaded the 5-1 Carolina triumph. Farris, the winner, moves to 5-3. Malachi Smith dealt the Stars a blow in the bottom of the first. Batting with the bases loaded and Carolina leading 1-0, Smith, who was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft, hit a 1-1 fastball for a 2-run single.

"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Carolina manager Kyle Caito. "It's usually not just one thing."
