Gladiators Victorious at San Diego, 4-2
|
The Phoenix Gladiators defeated the San Diego Fleet, 4-2, at Peter Seidler Memorial Stadium. Phoenix was led by 29-year old shortstop Paul McCarthy, who went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk. Mike Walsh, the winning pitcher, is now 2-0. He went 5.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, while fanning 9 and walking 1. Manny Brant notched his 3rd save of the season.
Phoenix used a well-timed hit by Mike Pierskalla to capture the win. The catcher socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Gladiators ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
"We just try to have good at-bats, whether we're winning, losing, or tied," said McCarthy.
With the win, Phoenix is 4-4.
