Royals Score Late to Nip Whistlers, 9-8
|
The Cincinnati Royals overcame a good performance by Boston designated hitter Austin Alpers to knock off Boston, 9-8, at Whislters Park. Alpers went 2-4 with a home run and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 and driving in 3. Cameron Hutchinson recorded the save for Cincinnati, his 18th of the season. The second-place Royals now sit at 44-27.
Had Pat Kirchner not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Kirchner hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 9-8, in favor of the Royals.
"Both teams had plenty of clutch hits," said Kirchner. "It made for an exciting game."
