Mendez Swings Eagles to 11-7 Win
|
With third baseman Victor Mendez leading the charge, the Indianapolis Eagles defeated the Syracuse Scorpions, 11-7, at Eagles Stadium. Mendez, who is tied for 5th in the NC in bases on balls with 36, went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. The winning pitcher was three-time All-Star J.R. Mitchell. He tossed 83 pitches over 6 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. Billy Westcott earned the save for Indianapolis, his 1st of the year.
Jerry Robinson had a big run-scoring double for the Eagles in the bottom of the first inning. With Indianapolis leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a changeup from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Bob Garbee and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Eagles ahead, 2-0.
"Feels good to get the job done," Robinson said after the game.
The Eagles have an impressive 43-25 record.
