Fire Beaten By Mounties, 7-6
|
Both teams had their chances, but the Vancouver Mounties eventually prevailed.
The Vancouver Mounties weathered an outstanding game by San Francisco designated hitter Leo Serna to topple the Fire, 7-6. Serna was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while scoring 3 and driving in 3. Greg Sandlin, who finished 5th in the NC in strikeouts with 229 in 2016, was the winning pitcher. Over 8 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Chris Brown sewed up the save, his 9th.
Jason Saunders had a big 2-run double for the Mounties in the bottom of the first inning. With Vancouver leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Tom Tchida, who finished 2nd in the NC in ERA with 2.53 last year, and swatted a double to left. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mounties ahead, 3-0.
"Nothing is scripted in this game," said Saunders.
The third-place Fire dropped to 26-36.
