Boston Beats Tampa Bay, 9-3
|
The Boston Whistlers picked up a win at Ahoy Park, dropping the Tampa Bay Captains, 9-3. Antonio Higuera, who finished 5th in the AC in wins with 14 in 2008, was the difference-maker. Higuera picked up the win for Boston, going 6 innings. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 14-13. Josh Flaten was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 3 of 4 save opportunities.
Willie Kirkham had a big 2-run double for the Whistlers in the top of the first inning. With Boston leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a curveball from Albert Fabian, who finished 3rd in the AC in innings pitched with 218.0 last year, and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 12th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Whistlers ahead, 3-0.
"If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Higuera.
Boston improves to 88-67 with the win. They lead their division by 18 games.
