The San Diego Fleet got a magnificent effort from pitcher Carlos Mendez, who kept Daytona Beach hitters in check en route to a 3-1 Fleet win at San Diego Stadium. Mendez, the winner, moves to 12-10. He threw 6.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 3 walks. The win elevated the Fleet to 82-66.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Fleet had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when right fielder Jacob Kennedy hit a 2-run single. The single came off Oscar Ayala and made the score 3-0, Fleet. Kennedy was 1 for 4. He drove in 2 runs.
"We busted our tails," said Daytona Beach manager Zachary Facundo. "But we came up short."
