The San Diego Fleet could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Corey Gruver into a win. Instead, the Detroit Giants prevailed, 6-5. Gruver threw 7.2 innings allowing 3 runs. Detroit goes to 78-60. The win puts them 11 games up in their division.

Detroit got a knockout punch from Ron Cardwell. The pinch hitter hammered a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

"The ending was a real humdinger," Cardwell told reporters after the game.
