Royals Find a Way to Win
|
The Cincinnati Royals and Phoenix Gladiators needed extra innings at Gladiators Ballpark to determine a winner.
The Phoenix Gladiators got a whale of a performance from first baseman Gabriel Crear, but the Cincinnati Royals still prevailed, 4-3, in 10 innings. Crear was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Gordie Clifford, who led the NC in saves with 47 last year, earned the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 3 innings. He upped his record to 7-5.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the tenth, with the game tied, Andrew Baltzley was at the plate when Cincinnati scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Royals to go in front, 4-3.
"What a great win for our team," said a jubilant Brad McBride, the Cincinnati manager.
Cincinnati, now 67-71, holds down third place in the National Conference North East Division.
