The Tampa Bay Captains beat the Oakland Invaders, 3-1, at Howard Terminal. Starting pitcher Joe Bernard was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. The second-place Captains now have a record of 19-36.

The Captains had to work out of trouble with no one out in the bottom of the ninth. The score was 3-1, Tampa Bay. But Oakland, with the bases empty, had mounted a threat. Pete Horne dug in at the plate. But on a first pitch fastball, Horne flied out.
