Captains Stumble, Lose to Giants
|
Wet weather did not postpone the Detroit-Tampa Bay ballgame.
The Detroit Giants romped over the Tampa Bay Captains, 11-3, at Ahoy Park. Ben Shafer led the way. He went 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for Detroit. Tony Espinoza got the win, improving to 1-0. He held the Captains to 3 runs on 6 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 1. Phil White closed out the game, earning his 1st save.
D'Andre Lyons had a big 2-run home run for the Giants in the top of the third inning. With Detroit trailing 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a sinker from Alex Holle, the 25th overall pick in the 2024 draft, and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Giants on top, 2-1.
"We scored more than enough runs this time," said Detroit manager Larry Voltaire. "Now watch. The next game we'll probably struggle to get a base hit."
With the loss, Tampa Bay drops to 2-3.
