Gladiators Lose at Home, 2-0
|
Starting pitcher Sam Campos gave the Austin Desperados a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Phoenix Gladiators, 2-0, at Gladiators Ballpark. The winning pitcher was Campos, now 6-7. He tossed 7.2 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 6. Joe McLaughlin picked up the save, his 30th.
The Gladiators had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Desperados going into the top of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 2017 Most Valuable Player Award winner Leo Serna came to the plate. Serna hit a 2-run home run on a 2-1 fastball from Phoenix hurler Rob Alvarez. It was Serna's 22nd home run of the year.
"Sam made the big pitches when he needed to," said Austin manager Tim Ward.
Austin now sits at 73-55, while Phoenix falls to 72-56.
