Carolina Slaps 2-1 Loss on Oakland

Carolina right-hander Steve Cates helped his team edge Oakland by the score of 2-1. Cates kept the opposing lineup in check. The winner was Cates. He threw 6.0 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Randy Fischer. By defeating Oakland, the third-place Reapers improved to 56-72.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Reapers had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the third, when shortstop Rich Simmer hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Randy Fischer and made the score 2-0, Reapers. Simmer was 1-3.
"Steve pitched like a son-of-a-gun," said Carolina manager Felipe Arriaga.
