In a low-scoring contest between the Austin Desperados and the Tampa Bay Captains, Joe Townsend, who is tied for 7th in the AC with a 1.15 WHIP, proved to be the difference. The Austin right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-1 Desperados win. Townsend got the win, improving to 12-4. He gave up 4 hits and walked 2 over 5 innings. He allowed 1 run. Bob Baucke was credited with the save for Austin, his 38th of the season.

Austin used a well-timed hit by Ross Gotch to capture the win. The designated hitter socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Desperados ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

Afterward, Tampa Bay manager Erik Thames said: "We were guessing wrong on pitches, and that's something we've got to get away from."

The second-place Desperados now have a record of 76-51.
