Big Day at the Plate for Pitts Not Enough for Fleet
The Cincinnati Royals withstood an impressive performance by San Diego left fielder Jon Pitts to defeat the Fleet, 8-6, at San Diego Stadium. Pitts was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Colin Lambert, the winning pitcher, improved to 9-11. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 2. Gordie Clifford earned the save for Cincinnati, his 38th of the year.

Cincinnati used a clutch at-bat from Mike Pelter to capture the win. The designated hitter hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Royals ahead, 8-4. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"We ground out the win," said Pelter. "That's all that matters."

By defeating San Diego, the second-place Royals improved to 71-53.
