The Phoenix Gladiators downed the Carolina Crown, 4-1, at Gladiators Ballpark. Stellar pitching by Bill Flowers had a lot to do with it. The left-hander, who finished 4th in the AC in ERA with 2.43 in 2015, handcuffed his opponent all game. Flowers picked up the win for Phoenix, going 6.2 innings. He gave up no runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 3-1. Oscar Malave was called on to finish, recording his 7th save.
Ton Ariëns, who leads the AC in extra base hits with 19, took Carolina hurler Kevin Daniels deep in the bottom of the fourth. His solo home run put the Gladiators on top, 1-0. In all, Ariëns had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.
In postgame remarks, Flowers hailed his team's "single-minded focus."
Phoenix is now 14-15.
