The Mobile Yard Dogs withstood an impressive performance by Washington catcher Fred Traxel to defeat the Wildthings, 7-5, at Red Barons Ballpark. Traxel was 2-3 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Nick Calhoun got the save, his 2nd in 2 chances. Mobile raised its record to 71-55 with the win.

Josh McAlpin had a big 2-run home run for the Yard Dogs in the top of the second inning. With Mobile leading 2-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a fastball from 26-year old right-handed pitcher Ken Surdyk and punished it. The result was his 9th home run of the season, which put the Yard Dogs on top, 4-0.

"We're all smiles after that win," McAlpin told the Mobile Chronicle.
