The first-place Winchester Mountaineers picked up another win.

The Winchester Mountaineers knocked off the Corpus Christi Mermen, 5-1, in Eastern AA action at Mountaineers Park. Winchester pitcher and Auburn, Nebraska, native Brian Treadway had an outstanding performance. The save was credited to Steve Gryder, his 26th.

Fred Hernandez dealt the Mermen a blow in the bottom of the fourth. Batting with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Winchester leading 1-0, Hernandez hit a 1-0 cutter for a 2-run single.

Said losing manager Arturo Colon: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."

The Mountaineers, at 67-24, have a comfortable 15½-game lead in their division.
