Getting a good performance from third baseman Fred Hernandez, the Winchester Mountaineers defeated the Corpus Christi Mermen, 4-3. Hernandez was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the Mountaineers. Steve Gryder snagged the win in relief. He goes to 5-2 on the season. Joe Townsend suffered the loss. Winchester raised its record to 66-24 with the win.

Hernandez delivered in the clutch for Winchester. In the bottom of the ninth, he took a first pitch fastball from Corpus Christi pitcher Joe Townsend and parked it over the fence. The solo home run won it for Winchester.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Hernandez. "And not try to do too much."
