Led by Jeremy Hammond, the Rohnert Park Cougars defeated the Traverse City Bears, 7-5. Hammond, a native of Brick, New Jersey, went 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Cougars. Ricky Valdez, the winner, goes to 2-0. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Dave Flores recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 3 for 3.
With Rohnert Park leading 4-0 in the top of the second, Hammond came up to bat against Traverse City pitcher Pat Potter. Hammond hit a changeup to left for a 2-run home run. His 7th home run of the season put the Cougars on top, 6-0.
"We want to make a habit of winning," Hammond said after the game.
The Cougars, at 34-46, inhabit 5th place in the Eastern AA Southen Division.
