The Cincinnati Royals spoiled a good performance by Indianapolis center fielder John Thaxton, bumping off Indianapolis, 7-4, at Eagles Stadium. Thaxton was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Pete Mead earned his 2nd save, after closing out the game. The Royals raised their record to 17-7.
Cincinnati used the timely hitting of Philip Gardner to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Royals on top, 7-4. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We had some nice at-bats at the right time," said Royals manager Brad McBride.
