The Winchester Mountaineers topped the Mescalero Chiefs, 5-3, in Eastern AA action at Chiefs Ballpark. The standout performance belonged to Winchester pitcher and Carson City, Nevada, native Gilberto Cortez. Cortez got the win, improving to 2-1. He gave up 3 hits and walked 1 over 5.2 innings. He allowed 1 run. The hot start continues for the defending champion Mountaineers. This was their 13th win in 19 games.

Winchester used a clutch at-bat from Josh Botello to capture the win. The first baseman hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to put the Mountaineers ahead, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"We were the better team," crowed Cortez.
