Mountaineers, Botello Blast Wildthings, 14-2
It should've been the best of times, but it was more like the worst for the Washington Wildthings: opening the season before the home crowd at Red Barons Ballpark with a real dud. Washington was never in it, losing, 14-2, to the Winchester Mountaineers. Earning kudos for his performance was Winchester first baseman Josh Botello. Marty Capone got the win, improving to 1-0. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9 and walking 1.

Winchester relied on the bat of Mike Hankins to get the win. The catcher produced a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Mountaineers ahead, 8-0. For the game, Hankins had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.

"They took us to the woodshed," said Washington manager Brendan Rees.
